Expressive therapies utilize creative arts in therapy sessions for the purpose of healing. The basis of expressive therapy is that creative expression can be used as a form of therapy for healing and processing emotions. Artwork may also be used to deepen communication in traditional psychotherapy.
Types of expressive therapy include art therapy, music therapy, dance therapy, movement therapy, and drama therapy. Expressive therapists may use other types of therapy techniques alongside expressive therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy and may also have a preferred art form that they are most experienced in.
Types of interventions used in session depend on your goals and the therapist’s preferred modality. Some examples of expressive therapy interventions include drawing, painting, dance or movement, photography, clay sculpture, writing prose or poetry, storytelling, role play, drama, and making or listening to music.
Because the focus of the art form is on the process over the product, you do not need to be experienced in the art form to benefit from expressive therapy. In sessions, an expressive therapist will guide you through one or multiple creative activities based on your goals and needs. Expressive therapy can be used for any age group and benefits a variety of concerns. At HCC, we are able to provide expressive therapy for anyone ages 6 and up.
The following conditions have been empirically shown to benefit from expressive therapies:
